I have been with Gillian off and on for almost ten years. And yet, there never seems to be a lack of new things to work on and new techniques to try. In addition, the performing opportunities that they create are nice to supplement my other performing engagements. As primarily a classically trained choral singer, the more opportunities I have had to sing solo in front of an audience have helped me feel much more at ease. On a related note, it has been such fun working with Gillian and Claire. They are both good friends and no matter how bad a day I may have had, they lift my spirit.

I have been singing all my life, and hope to make it my life’s work, but I always felt like there was something missing, some secrets, some tricks to make certain things easier. No voice teacher I have had in the past was able to help me get over this hurdle, until I met Gillian. She helped me open up and do things that I never thought possible with my voice! In the short time that I have been with Gillian and Claire, I feel that I have improved immensely and understand that through hard work and being open to anything, you can do anything! And I don’t know what we would do without Claire! I have never had an accompanist so talented and patient!! One of the benefits of working with Claire and Gillian is that I’ve learned to look at a piece of music in its entirety to find the “story”. The lyrics communicate the story, but so does the music (the notes, the rests, the tempo, etc.). As a singer, I often focus my attention on “what I’m trying to say” within the context of the lyrics and Claire has worked with me to listen to what the music is saying before I put the words to it. Then Gillian will work to build upon that and provide coaching in performance and vocals. The result for me has been the ability to connect emotionally to a song, understand what I want to communicate and effectively communicate it to an audience.

Gillian is a great actor’s voice teacher. Not only does she focus on the song, but your intention behind it as well. And Claire is a strong accompanist; She will work with you until you get it right. I have learned a great deal from both of them.
